Sarah Ashley is a fibre artist from the Beswick community 107 klms S/E of Katherine. She is a prolific pandanus weaver who in recent times has been adapting contemporary forms with traditional weaving techniques. She has run several weaving workshops her most recent at the Dreaming festival in Woodford. She has also exhibited at the Katherine festival in 2008 , the Self Preservation Gallery in Melbourne and the Nomad Arts Gallery 2009. Work that Sarah developed as part of the Pandanus Project was purchased for the Charles Darwin University collection.

Peta Smith: Fabric Printing

Peta Smith

Has lived in the Northern Territory since 1982. She is a qualified art teacher I has worked in many remote communities teaching fabric printing to regional remote women, in both the desert and tropical communities in the Territory. She has also worked as an art teacher in high schools and played a role in assisting students with fabric printing courses at CDU. Throughout this time Peta has managed her fabric printing practice, undertaking all aspects of printing and making fashion items, which she sells at the Nightcliff markets at a self managed stall. Peta is well known throughout the Territory particularly for her individual lino prints and quality of work.

Rita Cameron Pandanus Coil Weaving

Rita Cameron is an Indigenous women living in the Beswick community 107klm S/E Katherine. She is a weaver,mother and tutor who has exhibited and taught traditional weaving at the Katherine Festival 2008 and at the Self Preservation Gallery Melbourne 2009. She regularly creates pandanus coil baskets for the Ghulmarn Cultural Centre and is pictured here running a pandanus workshop in Katherine as part of the Pandanus Project 2008.

Michael Roseth

Michael is a highly qualified print artist who has worked at all levels of printmaking from workshops to lecturing at the Charles Darwin University over the past 10 years. He has also undertaken major projects and exhibited widely including several solo shows and numerous group exhibitions. Dorcas Thompson: Bush Toy Making grass and wool

This workshop is a light weight relaxing way to free up your imagination. Dorcas Thompson is an Indigenous weaver who grew up at the community of Ngukurr. She has been teaching bush toy workshops for the past two years in and around the Katherine region. This workshop is guaranteed to give you creative satisfaction and the technique taught can be easily transferred into your home environment.

Boronia Saggers Silk Scarf Shibori with Native Plant Dyes

Boronia Saggers has been experimenting with dyeing silk with native plant material for the past 10 years. She uses a shibori technique to manipulate and add texture and design to the material. Her workshop will involve colouring silk scarves with a purple berry plant as well as a unique "puff ball" dye. Boronia prides her silks for their rich and vibrant colours.

Toni has lived in the Katherine Region all her life and her strong attachment to the country has seen her develop her writing and photography skills over many years. She has delivered workshops in regional remote communties teaching skills with a focus on local environment appreciation.

Barthulha Webs is a project facilitated by Jayne Nankivell and Adrienne Kneebone to provide residents of the Katherine Region an opportunity to spend the weekend learning new art techniques and exchanging artistic ideas and skills. The project is aimed at women ( but not exclusive to ) living in remote areas and will offer workshops in lino printing,weaving and dyeing with natural dyes.

Three weavers, two print makers and a fabric dyer will be running a program of workshops over two days, Saturday and Sunday, July 25th-26th. Stay tuned for profiles of the artists involved and details of how to register your interest.
